WE ARE

REAL people, reflecting Jesus

Relevant - Enthusiastic - Authentic - Loving

We Truly Care

Have you ever had someone ask how you are, but not wait for the answer? Before you even opened your mouth, they already dashed off to another conversation. Or maybe you felt pressured to respond with a smile and the standard “Great!” … when what you REALLY felt was anything but.

At NBBC, we’re a close-knit community that genuinely cares about your well-being.
We stop and listen to you. We sit and pray with you. We reserve judgement and support you. If you’re looking to finally be seen, heard, and understood by your church, you’ve come to the right place.

Our Core Beliefs

GOD CREATED ALL THINGS

God created the heavens, earth, and humankind. We are formed in His image and called to live out his purpose so we may impact others and build His kingdom.

THE BIBLE IS OUR TRUE AUTHORITY

The Bible is a collection of historical texts and scripts that tell a unified story, leading to Jesus. Its words are true and accurate throughout ALL time.

FORGIVENESS IS OPEN TO EVERYONE

Humans are broken and prone to sin, but through the life, death, and resurrection of Christ, anyone who seeks forgiveness and follows Jesus can be saved.

Partnerships

  • COMMUNITY

We have a strong sense of community within our church walls, throughout surrounding neighbourhoods, and across our greater world. We believe that Jesus delights when we gather for His greater glory.

  • AUTHENTICITY

The mission of our church is to be REAL, authentic reflections of Jesus. His way is the truth for living and brings peace, joy, and hope in healing our past, living in our present, and growing into our future.

  • ACCESSIBILITY

We teach God's word in a clear, practical way so you can develop your faith and apply what you've learned in everyday life. Christianity isn't just meant to be a Sunday thing; but something you live out every day.

Meet Our Team

  • Merv Budd - Lead Pastor

As the Sr. Pastor and primary preacher, Merv oversees the staff and helps to equip the congregation to pursue what God has created them to do. He enjoys studying the Bible and helping to make it relevant for people in the context of their everyday lives.

Always social and smiling, Merv loves meeting new people and hearing their stories. Just don't let your guard down if you're playing board games or bowling with him as Merv is "very competitive" (his words, not ours) - in good fun, of course! He also enjoys working out, drinking coffee, and hanging out with his friends and family.

  • Karmyn Bokma - Worship Arts & Congregational Engagement Pastor

On Sunday mornings, you can find Karmyn is in her element—leading worship and engaging with the congregation. Whether she’s on the keyboards, singing, or preaching (or doing all three like the superwoman she is), Karmyn finds joy in bringing people closer to God. Her heart is in helping others make space for Jesus to show up in all that they do. She’s also a connector: someone who helps people connect with their spiritual gifts and the greater church community.

One of Karmyn’s hidden talents is being left-handed. She also loves playing sports and is obsessed with games. Board games, card games, group games … you name it! When she adds good friends, food, and drinks, she’s in her happy place.

  • Phil McAllister - Associate Pastor of Children & Family Ministries

A family guy at heart, Phil loves walking alongside children and families as they grow in their faith. At NBBC, he provides leadership and vision for children & family programming, volunteer development, and community outreach.

With a background in psychology, Phil enjoys exploring how faith intersects with everyday life and how we can rise to God’s calling. He also equips and encourages our volunteers, helping them feel confident, supported, and inspired to serve with excellence.

When he’s not at church, you’ll find him spending time with his wife and two small kiddos or browsing used bookstores. Fun fact: Phil studied Ancient Hebrew to complete his BA … and he’s committed to maintaining at least a modest grasp of the language!

  • Michelle Dewhurst - Ministry Oversight & Systems Development

Michelle is NBBC’s go-to “keep things running smoothly” woman. She coordinates, supervises, and supports the church’s key programs—helping them stay organized, properly resourced, and aligned with NBBC’s greater mission. She loves putting strong systems into place that make life easier for everyone, from team members to volunteers.

Outside of NBBC, Michelle keeps equally busy. She’s a mom to two teenagers, is taking pastoral courses at McMaster Divinity College, and is the founder of Michelle Lynn Interior Design, a boutique design studio. When free time calls, Michelle doesn’t need convincing to grab a coffee and hit the thrift shops. (Her keen design eye helps her score some amazing finds!)

  • Hannes Oberholzer - Youth Programs & Media Coordinator

Hannes leads the charge for youth between grades 6 to 12 as well as post-secondary student and young adults. This includes teaching Sunday School, running the Chaos group, coordinating special outing and retreats, and posting updates on NBBC's social media pages.

His passion lies in curating an environment where young people can take ownership of their faith in a meaningful way. His dream is for teens to hear the gospel and come to know Jesus in a way that transforms their lives and drives them to know Him better.

When the warm weather hits, you can find Hannes working in the church garden patches, kayaking, and enjoying wildlife.

  • Rhonda Riepert - Bookkeeper

Happily retired from the high stress of corporate finance, Rhonda spends two afternoons a week at NBCC recording expenses, preparing payments & bank reconciliations, and much more.

Her heart has always been with numbers. They don’t lie, they don’t argue, and 1+1 always equals 2. Rhonda feels blessed to have the opportunity to work for her church family, and NBBC feels equally grateful to have her.

Away from spreadheads and screens, Rhonda loves her quiet time. Her perfect Friday night activity is curling up with a cup of tea, watching a good action movie, or doing a puzzle. She also loves tent camping at Killbear Provincial Park with her sons, siblings, and their families.
